Where the Lion of Belfort watches over a whole region

France, journey, tip, tourism

Holidays in Eastern France is not expensive: in the Franche-Comté region, visitors can expect numerous excursion tips for the small wallet all year round. From May to August guests can discover the beauties of the region with a variety of free activities.

A walk through the ancient spa town Luxeuil-les-Bains, built of the pink sandstone of the South Vosges, is also an architectural time journey: the city has been known since ancient times for its hot springs and goes back to a Gallic sanctuary around the soothing warm waters. In the 6th century, the Irish-Scottish missionary Kolumban founded the later abbey Luxeuil.

From July 5th to August 30th the night market will take place on the Saint-Pierre and Place de la Baille squares every Tuesday evening from 5pm. Visitors will be able to enjoy a variety of local specialties, as well as small concerts until late Into the night. For those who are particularly interested in culture, a visit to the richly-stocked Garret museum in the town of Vesoul, just a few kilometers from Luxeuil-les-Bains, offers you free admission to more than 3,000 steles, sculptures and paintings from different eras .

The Franche-Comté region is located in the far east of France, close to the Swiss border, and includes the four sub-regions of Territoire de Belfort, Haute-Saône, Doubs and Jura. It is one of the most forest and water regions in the country and is characterized by a great diversity of landscapes, with the meadows surrounding the Doubs, Saône, Ain and Loue rivers, the “one thousand lakes” as well as the mountains of the Vosges and the mountains of the Jura massif.

Franche-Comté’s cultural and historical wealth can be found in the larger towns of Besançon, Belfort and Montbéliard, but also in the many medieval villages. RV sites and campsites are everywhere.
